Wei Zhang, PhD

As Senior Associate of Life Sciences, Wei applies his broad healthcare industry knowledge and experience in the United States and Asia to identify partnership opportunities, conduct due diligence and support Safeguard’s partner companies in various aspects.

Prior to joining Safeguard, Wei was working part-time at BioAdvance, a state initiative committed to funding early-stage life sciences companies, while he was pursuing his MBA at the Wharton School. During business school, Wei also did summer internships in venture capital at Burrill & Company and Fidelity Asia Ventures, and consulted for several private equity and life sciences firms. 

Before Wharton, Wei was a Department Head at ImmunoGen, Inc., a leader in the application of monoclonal antibodies for the treatment of cancer, where he built a new division in drug development and contributed to ImmunoGen’s license agreements with leading pharmaceutical and biotech companies. Prior to ImmunoGen, Wei was a staff scientist at Genetics Institute, a division of Wyeth, developing antibody and protein biologics in several therapeutic areas. Wei finished his postdoctoral research in combinatorial chemistry at Sphinx Pharmaceuticals/Eli Lilly.

Wei has authored more that 15 scientific publications, numerous conference presentations, and is inventor on six pending patents. Wei has also organized several professional conferences and symposia in life sciences. 

Wei graduated with a BS in chemistry and honors from Nanjing University, China, and received his MA and PhD from Boston University. Wei also holds an MBA from the Wharton School, where he received a fellowship in healthcare entrepreneurship.
