In February of 1981, Safeguard Scientifics reached an agreement to deploy capital in a promising new venture, Novell Data Systems, Inc., in return for a majority interest. A pioneer in the high-tech market, Novell developed systems for a relatively new microcomputer concept called ‘networking’.

Anticipating an explosion of PC-related innovations in the workplace, Safeguard helped partner company Novell orient its primary focus to NetWare, its differentiated, open-source networking system enabling microcomputers to tap into a common information source, communicate and share peripheral devices.
