Week in Review: Venture Capital Growth and MediaMath on the Talent Gap

Posted by | November 4, 2011

According to a report published by Cambridge Associates LLC, private equity and venture capital funds in the U.S. continued to generate positive returns for their investors during the second quarter. The funds also finished the first half of 2011 with quarterly and six-month returns well above the public equity markets. The report cites IT and healthcare sectors as the main drivers of this second quarter performance. This is a great sign that amidst a still challenging global macroeconomic environment, Safeguard is well positioned to accelerate future growth with its innovative technology and life science company investment strategy.

Safeguard Scientifics was recently featured on Seeking Alpha in an article profiling public incubator and investment companies worth following. We were highlighted for our proclivity to not only supply emerging growth companies with capital, but also provide strategic counsel moving forward.

In partner company news, MediaMath chief executive, Joe Zawadzki, was featured in The New York Times about the growing talent gap facing digital advertisers. Zawadzki described the limited ad-tech talent pool, as many firms are looking for the same qualified talent—those who can combine pure quantitative skills with creative marketing skills.

Another partner company, NuPathe, recently announced the appointment of Bart J. Dunn as its Vice President of Corporate Development and Licensing. Dunn is an accomplished biopharmaceutical executive with more than 20 years of experience at both large and small life sciences companies who will be a great asset in pursuing new business development and pharmaceutical licensing for NuPathe.

In two weeks, Safeguard will be attending NFTE Philadelphia’s Third Annual Visionary Gala to celebrate the Greater Philadelphia region’s youth entrepreneurs.  Be sure to reserve your seat and join us on Nov. 17 with our 2011 gala honoree, Michael G. Rubin, Founder and CEO of Kynetic, and Founder and Former CEO of GSI Commerce.
